Gavin R Smith
Rock Drummer

Gavin accidentally learned to drum when he was very young because his oldest brother played. He got his drums out of the loft and started playing for real in early 1984. Gavin could already play well enough to join a band. He continued to learn by playing along with Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Heart albums.

Gavin formed a band with Paul Dockree called White Rhino later in 1984. They played AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Twisted Sister songs.

Paul and Gavin formed a new band in 1985 called After Dark. Gavin played his first gig with After Dark in 1987 and did his first recording session with them at 80’s studio in Hitchin. Some of the covers they used to do included Y&T, Rainbow and Bad Company songs.

Gavin was poached in 1988 to join Jon Fos, Ray Simpkins and Dave Warminger from Valhalla. That same year they recorded a couple of songs with Brian Knight.

Ray moved on soon after and those left formed Vagrant with Dale Edgar from Moonstone. In 1990 and 1991 they recorded several songs with Brian Marshall. Vagrant did lots of gigging, once playing several venues on the same day. They used to include Whitesnake, Deep Purple and Van Halen covers in the set.

Gavin joined Hardware in 1994. In 1995 and 1997 they recorded at Nigel Neill’s studio in Buckingham. Hardware's set included Counting Crowes and David Bowie numbers amongst others.

In 1999 Gavin put together a band with Dave Warminger and Dale Edgar called DeadLarge but continued to work with Hardware. DeadLarge specialised in complex Guitar Rock including stuff by Whitesnake, Van Halen, Steve Vai, Mr Big and Deep Purple.

In 2001 Gavin joined Nick Rossi’s Little Egypt, while still working with Hardware. Gavin got Little Egypt busy gigging as soon as he could and they were playing as far away as Germany and France within the year.

Gavin also drummed for Grunties, Danno and Laura Butterworth in 2001 and played live several times with Shady Deal. Shady Deal play classic pub rock.

In 2002 and 2003 Little Egypt went out on tour with Status Quo, playing places like Wembley and the NEC. Gavin drummed on, co-wrote and co-produced Little Egypt’s recordings in 2003 and 2004.

Gavin recorded drums on an album for a duo called Silk in 2004. Silk's material is mainly West End show type stuff.

In 2005 Gavin played Hardware’s 200th gig with them. Their current set includes Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Nirvana and Green Day numbers as well as their own material.

In 2007 Gavin got together with Guy Barnes at GnT studios in Storrington and has done a few recordings sessions with him as well as a one off gig and a video.

Gavin has recently been working with Jeff Clark, a tallented singer from Redhill, on a handfull of projects, desperately trying to put together a tallented couvers band south of London. By the summer of 2008 they'd done years of rehearsing but only one gig with Liquid Shotgun and a handfull with Teaser.
